CLINICAL TRIALS
Partially decentralized clinical trials surpass traditional
News Source Logo Source: Science 37

Science 37 ran a survey of 127 clinical trial professionals in September and October of this year. These professionals were asked how they were approaching decentralized clinical trials (DCTs). For the first time, hybrid and agile trials were higher than traditional trials.

When asked about the benefits of DCTs, researchers said it's all about the patients in experience, retention, and recruitment:

The top component of DCTs that researchers are planning to use is remote monitoring. However, apparently not through wearables:

For anyone involved in clinical trial planning and design it looks like its time to more seriously consider decentralized trials.

Hospital Systems in Trouble

After the economy in general, physicians fear for the healthcare systems in which they work. The pandemic has caused a lot of strain in terms of lower revenue and increased cost for systems and could put some in financial risk.

Fitness trackers most used health tech
News Source Logo Source: Healthline

A new survey of over 2,100 Americans from Healthline looks at how we relate to health innovations and consumer health technologies. There is excitement but a lot of room for more adoption.

Fitness Trackers Most Used

Of the technologies actually used by Americans fitness trackers take top spot with 50% of the population. Note, however, that this number is both "ever tried" and "currently use" so it's hard to know how many stuck with it.

Sleep Tech is Most Satisfying

The users of different technologies were asked how satisfying they were. Of the four measured—sleep, fitness, nutrition, and mental health—these were the technologies that got the highest satisfaction score:

Physical Health Most Important Topic

While mental health has taken center stage during the pandemic for attention, physical health remains the primary driver of health technologies for Americans (it's a close race though). When asked why they would use health tech to manage their physical health they wanted to improve it (well, yeah -Ed.) first but then also wanted to prevent future problems:

HCPs say telehealth helps, 83% plan to continue
News Source Logo Source: Good Rx

GoodRx surveyed 1,042 US adults and 624 HCPs (also presumably US-based) to see ask about their experiences with telehealth. Overall they were very positive.

Patients

We can see that across many facets of telemedicine patients rated the experience the same as in-person or better with only a few on the negative side:

Healthcare Professionals

HCPs are a bit more positive than patients. On three different topics the HCPs ranked telemedicine better than in-person visits:

This explains why 83% of HCPs plan to continue using telemedicine into the future. Check out the full story for other findings such as what platforms are used (spoiler: Zoom is on top).

News Source Logo Source: Publicis

The Digital Life Index is a study of 9,300 citizens from 12 regions globally published by Publicis Sapient (credit where credit is due -Ed.). Like the name states, it looks at how people are using digital in 2021. Spoiler, it's more.

More Digital Than Even 2020

The increased digital usage that came with lockdowns during the first waves of the pandemic haven't fallen off, in fact 55% of Americans are using more digital than a year ago.

Telemedicine Leans Toward Education and Information

The report has a section on telehealth and 41% of Americans have used this service (second only to digital powerhouse, Thailand). Of these telehealth users, 76% say they plan to use the service as much or more into the future. When asked what types of health visits they would trust to telehealth, the less "hands on" ones got the most traction:

NON-PERSONAL PROMOTION
A digital pandemic for reps

These two numbers are related: 500% increase in digital HCP / rep engagement and 75% reduction in promotional activity worldwide. The pandemic took its toll on rep activities but offices are opening back up (that part is from other studies, not IQVIA's infographic).

SOCIAL
69% get news on Twitter and trust is high
News Source Logo Source: Pew Research

Now here's a story you don't see often and it might speak to Twitter's resurgence of late with marketers. This story from PEW looks at the roughly 25% of Americans who are Twitter users in terms of how much news they consume on the platform.

69% of Twitter users get news on the platform and those users access the platform fairly often:

67% of these users have at least some trust in the content they see on the platform, a departure from other social platforms:

Finally, without getting too deep into politics, Twitter news users seem to feel that the platform is more positive than non-news users although this is likely correlation not causation:

Apple Wallet DMV agreements could shed light on future health integrations
News Source Logo Source: Fintech Business Weekly

A journalist, Jason Mikula, who writes about financial tech looked into Apple's agreements with multiple states to enable drivers licenses in the company's Wallet service. He comes to the conclusion that it might be a way into the Identity Verification market for Apple.

Mikula found that most of the project control was with Apple including what devices it can run on, how the service is managed, and where it can be used. This might shed light on any future agreements that Apple develops with EHR vendors and likely highlights potential privacy concerns. We will leave it to security researchers to handle the heavy lifting, but this is an interesting story to be sure.

IGNORANCE IS ANTI-VAXX
Anti-Vaxxers troll Tesco ad in the UK
News Source Logo Source: MM+M

Tesco, a UK grocery chain, ran an ad that featured Santa saving Christmas because he had a vaccine passport and could enter the country.

mmm-tesco-600 Image adapted for email from MM+M source

Unsurprisingly this promotion of good public health policy drove anti-vaxxers apoplectic with ignorance-fueled rage (tell me what you really think -Ed.). The company's ad has received over 3,000 complaints with the Advertising Standards Authority

Most of the complaints state that the ad encourages medical discrimination, picking up on the scene of Santa having to show his vaccination status to enter the U.K.

This would be a humorous sideshow except that the bureaucrats at the Authority have banned other ads targeted by anti-vaxxers. When advertising standards get in the way of good public health policy they need to be reviewed.

Happily Tesco is not bowing to the pressure of a small number of vocal people. Tesco stated:

“We set out to create a campaign which took a light-hearted view on how the nation is feeling and it has been well received by colleagues and customers. We are still in the midst of a pandemic and the advert reflects the current rules and regulations regarding international travel.”

MHEALTH
Combined device mHealth gets to 98% accuracy
News Source Logo Source: FierceBiotech

One of the great things about large volumes of consumers using mHealth devices is the opportunity for massive studies. This one from Fitbit looked at 450,000 users who signed up to determine if the device could detect Afib.

The study broke down like this:

kw-bullet

450,000 participants

kw-bullet

4,700 alerts with offer of ECG patch testing kit

kw-bullet

1,000 accepted patch testing kit

kw-bullet

Approximately 33% second alert for Afib

kw-bullet

98% accuracy over full test

That's approximately 330 people who were diagnosed with Afib and had the ability to follow up with their doctors. The recent Apple test didn't use the second device and had an 84% accuracy rate, not bad for software alone.
