HCP Opinions
HCPs burning out and considering alternatives
Source: Doximity

Doximity's annual Physician Compensation Report is out and it paints a picture of an industry that is burning out its most important workers.

51.7% Considering Leaving Career

Just over half of physicians are considering leaving the profession and either retiring or taking their skills elsewhere. This is a huge number and the reason is overwork. Only 13.7% say they are not overworked.

71% Would Consider Lower Pay

To drive the point home, not only do many physicians want to change careers, but 71% of them would take lower pay to do it. That is the proof point that overwork in the industry is at critical levels.

87% Dislike Non-Competes

Anything that restricts a worker's rights is problematic and physicians are particularly vulnerable because the number of positions in a geographic region can be limited.

This report has a lot more data, such as specialty salaries that range from $300k to $788k and regional differences. Grab a copy to see where your physician base fits.

Consumer "tribes" give good vibes
Source: SheerID

A new report from SheerID is based on a survey of 4,000 consumers in the US and UK and looks at how their spending habits are changing due to economic conditions. What they found was that groups who self-identify ("tribes") can have higher affinity for brand programs.

There are five groups identified in the report that said they would be more likely to respond to a brand that gave them a exclusive offer.

We can see the effects of the pandemic in these groups (although, we're not sure if the data highlighted this or if SheerID segmented it on spec.) Either way, when asked what these groups would do if a brand had an exclusive offer for them healthcare workers responded relatively strongly.

HCP marketers can lean into this by crafting offers seen as exclusive and language that reinforces the shared experiences of that "tribe."

Top post types for health
Source: Rival IQ

RivalIQ compiled a benchmark report for 14 industries comprised of 2,100 companies (150 each). As is often the case, pharma isn't in the mix, the closest the report comes is "Health & beauty."

Still, this category is at least aligned with healthcare and some of the dermatology conditions would be well-aligned.

Here are the top hashtags for three platforms in health & beauty by engagement rate. They show how the different platforms have very different audience expectations.

Instagram for Family and Events

This list of top calendar events points the way for marketers on all platforms.

Twitter for Giveaways

The "free stuff" engagement on Twitter really blows everything else away.

TikTok is Engagement

Even the lowest hashtag on the TikTok list is much higher than either Twitter or Instagram. Until it gets banned (spicy -Ed.) this is a hot platform for brands with a younger audience.

The above are all for health & beauty. Grab the full report for other industries, including what influencers are doing on the platforms.

Privacy and trust are about data
Source: Razorfish

Razorfish and GWI surveyed 1,672 global consumers to get insight into how they feel about privacy and personalization. Unsurprisingly what they found was that people crave control.

If you ask nicely, people will agree to data use, but beware that trust can be lost quickly.

Brands need to take the lead. Consumers worry about trust but don't act on that worry... until they read about it in the news (presented on social media, obviously).

Omnichannel reps low, but in-person reasonable
Source: Tealium

Last week we reported on the A-Cross / Tealium report on omnichannel HCP marketing. We showed this chart which highlighted that very few reps were reaching HCPs:

What isn't clear from our chart is that this percentage is reps who reached HCPs on all omnichannel touchpoints. To get a better view of the Venn diagram, here are rep contacts by different channels:

Here we see that total Rep reach is 70% (30% not reached). The different channels for that reach provide insight for marketers wanting to prioritize activities.

Lock your doors, health is target #1
Source: Statista

Health data is the most valuable on the trading spaces on the dark web so it's no surprise that healthcare is the number one target of hackers. Most of these will be provider networks and ERP systems but all healthcare brands need to stay vigilant.

TikTok testimony to Congress was difficult

In a nearly six-hour hearing TikTok's CEO Shou Zi Chew was grilled by lawmakers and asked hard questions about Chinese involvement in the company, data access and storage, and harmful content on the platform.

Chew tried to stay on message but was unable to provide direct answers to many important questions. Coming out of the hearing there is still no consensus about whether the app will be banned for the public in the US.

Wealth management firm Wedbush described the hearing as a “disaster” for TikTok that made a ban more likely if it doesn’t separate from its Chinese parent.

Versus this point about the potential for a trade war if the app is banned.

“We have Tesla in China, we have Microsoft in China, we have Apple in China. Are they going to start banning us now?” [David Kennedy, a former government intelligence officer who runs the cybersecurity company TrustedSec] said. “It could escalate very quickly.”

We will continue to monitor this issue. It's hard to predict at this point.

Who wins if TikTok is banned in the US?
Source: TechCrunch

In a note to investors the firm Bernstein Private Wealth Management said that other social platforms would benefit if TikTok is banned.

Meta, Google and Snap could see a spike in revenue due to TikTok’s absence, which could likely also benefit their stocks, Bernstein’s note said. TikTok’s projected revenue in the U.S. was expected to be in the ballpark of $7 billion to $8 billion, the note said.

Regulatory
Pharma regulations finally come in handy
Source: Reuters

The FTC has issued orders to eight social media and video streaming firms including Meta, Twitter, TikTok, and YouTube asking about misleading ads. Health is a primary topic in this investigation.

The regulator is seeking to scrutinize and restrict paid commercial advertising that is deceptive or exposes consumers to fraudulent healthcare products, financial scams, counterfeit and fake goods, or other fraud.

Pharma is certainly on the right side of the law here, and the platforms have their strict policy groups that we deal with daily. Assuming other industries get the same scrutiny that policy directs at pharma the platforms should shine in this review.

If, however, the FTC comes away with issues regarding the platforms' policy groups then pharma should rightly ask about differences in policy for us versus other industries.

In other FTC news, this article highlights that the agency is planning even more health regulation in 2024: "FTC: Healthcare data privacy major priority in '24 fiscal budget."

Approov conducted an in-depth review of financial services apps and found a lot of security holes. The full article goes into detail on the types of attacks the researchers were testing for from logins to data transfers.

When they compared vulnerabilities by country, Germany stood out as the best but no country was completely clean. (Red is apps with vulnerabilities, green apps with none.)

Health products to grow share of ecommerce sales
Source: eMarketer

As commerce continues its trend online, and as health remains a focus for consumers globally, eMarketer predicts strong growth for the segment. In fact, they predict 2% growth in market share by 2027; the largest in their category set.

The most prominent ecommerce-buying trend of the last few years has been the explosive growth of essential goods, including personal hygiene products and household goods. We expect this behavior to stick in the long term, causing health and personal care to grow from 11.3% of ecommerce sales this year to 13.3% in 2027, the largest increase of any category.
